uh. . .  gothic no, dark yes when its needed.
1.  I find its a lot easier to make things that are darker because it tends to hide any mistakes, you dont have to be quite as precise. 

2.  Many people i've made stuff for have wanted darker themed stuff. 

3.  And finaly it depends on the emotion i trying to put into it e. g.  a politicaly themed design, if it's dark it tends to show anger and protest, where if i used bright colours it wouldnt be as effective.

Yeh those bands like this style but i work with more progressive/alternative/rock because those are my favourite genres, only a small part of my muscial taste though.  I realy cant stand the heavy metal.

As for price that varies on the band.  I do a lot of stuff for free (i'm only 16 so price doesnt realy worry me that much, helping out the bands does) but some i just get paid by getting the bands cd's for free, free entry to gigs or getting them to gig in my little town.  But for things major things like a CD cover i do charge, but price is something i discuss with the band, work out what they can afford.
