I have no idea if there is a difference can any one give me the low down on this?

I thought both of those were the same just different software calling it a different ext.  I know some formats are used to pack in more detail but use more memory and others are just like a photo of a complex map that just eats memory unless you desire to play with the picture pixels.

They handle compression a bit differently. .JPG seems to be the norm these days, so stick with that.
